|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every month that begins at 7:30 pm on day Third of the month, repeating indefinitely

Tuesday, September 20, at 7:30 p.m. we’ll meet by Zoom to discuss Hannah’s War by
Jan Eliasberg
“Hannah’s War explores the wartime life of a brilliant Jewish female physicist, Dr. Hannah Weiss,
but based on a real (and largely unsung) genius named Lise Meitner. Working at the Kaiser Wilhelm Laboratory in 1938 Berlin, Hannah, despite her remarkable ability, is gradually relegated
to the basement of a national operation to create the atomic bomb. Her research is increasingly
uncredited and co-opted by her Aryan cohorts. Although her scientific prowess is needed, she is
Jewish, at a time when Jews were gradually becoming non-persons.” (Jewish Book Council)

Tuesday, October 18, at 7:30 p.m. we’ll meet by Zoom to discuss
Concealed by Esther Amini
“When Esther Amini was a girl, her father would intercept her mail before it hit the ground as the
postman dropped it through the slot. It was only one of many examples of her father’s infuriating,
extreme overprotectiveness. It took decades for Amini to fully understand that the origins of her
father’s odd behavior were not rooted in her native New York, but in the soil of faraway Mashhad,
Iran. In Mashhad, her parents’ families had survived for centuries by hiding their true identity—
and being suspicious of anyone outside the Jewish community.” (The Times of Israel)

For future planning, save these dates and read these books:
November 15 – The Last Kings of Shanghai by Jonathan Kaufman
December 20 – The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem by Sarit Yishai-Levi
